Indian Rajah Floor Slate - Characteristics

Rajah has a variety of colours - orange, ochre, pink, purple, green & grey. It is a softer, more porous slate than our other slates so it is best suited to internal areas. It is not suitable for wet areas e.g. shower areas or uncovered outside areas, unless sealed and regularly maintained. A choice of edging is available: straight edges or chipped edges, the latter giving a very natural appearance once laid.

Slate Flooring - Natural & Eco Friendly Building Material

A measure of the environmental credentials of a building product is the involvement by man and process up to the point where it is fixed to a building. On that basis this slate is a clear winner. This slate has a natural split surface which means it is split along natural cleavage lines and does not require expensive, energy demanding, processing machinery to saw it. However, It does mean the thickness of the material varies a bit - naturally!

Slate Tiles - Colour & Texture Enhanced with Natural Split Surface

Rajah slate splits naturally along planes reveals pallets of vivid pink and purple colour not seen in stone with processed surfaces. The topography of the surface is intricate and has character, depth and grain - as you will see in the image below. Flakes of slate that are occasionally seen are evidence that the stone is high enough quality to split naturally and that it is genuinely slate.. The flakes if present, are easily removed as explained in the FAQ section.

To Seal or Not To Seal?

There are three very practical reasons for sealing:
When used indoors, some people prefer the colour enhancement provided by surface sealers. The application of a surface sealer reduces dust and makes cleaning is easier.
Sealants protect the slate from oil and grease stains especially around food preparation areas. Unless these are wiped up quickly, they will leave marks on an unsealed surface.
Rajah ocasionally has small "freckles" of iron compounds that can rust over time, if exposed to salt air in outdoor situations. The application of a surface sealer for slate used outdoors is therefore recommended as it will prevent any discolouration or possible pitting.

The images below are also of Rajah slate. On the left the slate has been photographed dry straight from the crate - but dusted to remove any fine sediment that is quite normal when slate is unpacked. The slate in the image on the right has been moistened. This lifts and enhances the colour. Apart from knowing what slate outdoors might look like after rain, the moistened slate takes on an appearance very similar to slate that has been sealed with products such as Enrich & Seal or Seal & Finish Low Sheen. High Gloss Sealer is likely to enhance and darken the colour even more. A penetrating sealer such as Sealers Choice Gold should have little effect on slate (or stone) colour.
